The Song of Lot and Eurydice
A short, moving opera on Biblical and Classical themes
The two stories presented in this work have been re-told, studied, and adored by centuries of artists, scholars, and readers alike. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is one of the most enduringly popular classical myths of a musician who goes to the underworld to bring back his love but at the last moment of their escape makes a fatal decision and loses her forever. The story of Lot’s Wife, while not as commonly told, carries through all three of the Abrahamic religions. It is the story of the family of Lot escaping the divinely spurned city of Sodom. Though they are told to not turn around, Lot’s Wife does and she is turned into a pillar of salt. The stories’ similarities make me wonder—did Orpheus and Lot’s Wife hear the same call?
